Opportunity Details

Junior Achievement Biztown and Finance Park

At JA World Huizenga Center, two “mini-city” experiential programs, JA BizTown and JA Finance Park, significantly transform how every 5th and 8th grade student in Broward County Public Schools is taught to view the world of work, free enterprise, and his or her possibilities for success.  Students buzz with the excitement and challenges that adults face every day in the real world.

Students come on a field trip to put their classroom instruction to work as they practice decision-making and learn about leadership and teamwork.

Volunteers are needed to help guide, assist, and facilitate students in a specific storefront during their on-site simulation in JA BizTown or JA Finance Park.   The first 45-minutes of the day will include all the training you need to help the students successfully navigate the “real” world.

Some of the responsibilities of the on-site volunteers include the following:

JA BizTown (5th graders):
1.    Make sure the students complete their tasks, i.e., writing out checks, following job-specific directions, and adhering to schedules.
2.    Assist the "CFO" or "CEO" in preparing their simple reports to be shared at the town hall meeting.
3.    Help the students clean up their assigned business.
4.    Allow students to do the work, and encourage them to do their best.
More information and JA BizTown Online Training is available at this link.

JA Finance Park (8th graders):
1.    Make sure the students follow their instructions on putting together their personal budget, based on their assigned real life case scenario sheet.
2.    Assist the students in figuring out the necessary amount for each budget item; i.e., food, clothing, housing, transportation, etc.
3.    Make sure the students follow their lunch and break schedules.
4.    Help the students clean up their assigned store front.
More information and JA Finance Park Online Training is available at this link.

To make the day a rewarding experience for you, please be aware of the following:
•    Volunteers should bring a bagged lunch and snacks for the day.  There are no vending machines or facilities to purchase food.
•    Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes.
•    Volunteers must go through a background check.
