Martin Luther King, Jr. Virtual Day of Service 2021

“Life’s Most Persistent and Urgent Question is: What are YOU Doing for Others?” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." This year, MLK Day will take place on Monday, January 18th. While we can’t come together in the hundreds in person this year, you can still join HandsOn Broward and HandsOn Miami in our Virtual MLK Day of Service so we can honor Dr. King’s life and legacy by completing service projects that will benefit local nonprofit agencies.
Each virtual volunteer opportunity will be focused on one impact area. All opportunities will be held via Zoom. Volunteers will be sent supply list & detailed instructions after signing up. Volunteers are responsible for purchasing supplies. Zoom links will be sent the day before the project.

10:00AM-11:00 AM: Sustainability
The legacy of Dr. King is of course best exemplified by his social justice work, and his understanding that racial inequity, poverty, politics, health, and human rights are all interconnected. Environmental justice is critical in protecting the overburdened communities of color that are frequently those most impacted by pollution and the effects of climate change. Join us this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service in honoring how we are all inexorably linked to the environment, and sustainably beautify our communities. Join HandsOn Miami’s Community Engagement Manager Cindy Ariza in making seed paper for easy wildflower planting in classroom gardens.

11:00AM-12:00PM: Financial Literacy
Join Project Leaders Katie and Carolina in a Financial Literacy activity for kids, ages 4-11. The best (and the worst) habits are formed from adolescence. If we think about the struggles we face as adults and the vices we find so difficult to stop, oftentimes, we can look back at our younger years and think: “Oh, I wish I knew then what I know now.” This activity will provide participants with a foundation for understanding good practices concerning money, they will learn easy-to-understand habits they can apply now. Children are sponges and can pick up things very quickly. But the best way to do that is to hear, watch, and do.

1:00PM-2:00PM: Teen Service Squad
Join Project Leader Dani in a project specifically for teen volunteers. Participants will explore diversity in art.  We have a beautiful story to share called, “The Color of Us” by Karen Katz – showing the rainbow of skin tones that exist in our world, and then will teach the teens how to create these various shades with paint.
