Broward: Read for the Record 2020!
Celebrate literacy by participating in the largest shared reading experience! Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® campaign mobilizes millions of children and adults to celebrate literacy by participating in the largest shared reading experience. Join us on October 29th, 2020 as we read together in big cities, small towns, and everywhere in between to put children first by shining a spotlight on the importance of high-quality early education. Locally, the Children’s Services Council of Broward County and Broward County Public Schools are coordinating Broward Reads for the Record. On October 29th between 8:00 AM and 12 PM, volunteers are needed by childcare centers and elementary schools to read “Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away” by Meg Medina to 40,000 students in 500 VPK centers, 225 schools and 1,500 classrooms throughout Broward County!
When you sign up for this project, you will be asked to:
- select a school
- type in your current email address
- type your best contact phone number
This year will be different from previous years in that the event will take place virtually. Registered volunteers will be assigned to a specific classroom and during the week of October 26th they will receive an invitation with a direct link to join the virtual classroom. Volunteers will receive the resources such as a copy of the book and reading tips from us at HandsOn Broward a few weeks prior to the reading date. They will also be contacted by the teachers whose class they will be reading to who will provide them with a zoom link to join the class on October 29th. The reading will not be a full 4 hour event from 8 AM- 12 PM. The start times for different locations will vary. The reading usually takes about an hour and most Elementary Schools will begin the reading around 8:00-8:30 AM. If the volunteers choose to read to a Child Care center or Charter School, the reading time may start later in the morning as late as 11 AM as their hours of operation may begin later.
Registration will close on Monday, October 19th, at 5:00 PM.
