Opportunity Details

Listen to Children (2016-2017 School Year)

This in-school mentoring program pairs caring adults one-on-one with elementary school students. Volunteers meet with each child once a week at the same time for 30 minutes, usually 3-4 children (so each meeting takes 1-2 hours). They become non-judgmental friends who develop unique relationships with the children so that their self-esteem and communication skills improve. The children's problem-solving skills and decision-making skills improve, too.

Due to the confidentiality of the relationship, parents and grandparents cannot volunteer at the school where their relatives attend.  The program requires training through the Mental Health Association of Southeast Florida and background clearance through the School Board. The training takes about 12 hours, and is usually held in Lauderhill. The meetings take place at various schools throughout Broward county during the school day.  More information available here.

Children need consistency! Volunteers must be willing make a weekly commitment for most, and preferably all, of the school year. Monthly logs are required.

When you express interest, MHA will get back to you regarding the training dates and other details.
The opportunity date and time you are looking for is no longer available.
