Help Children Learn to Read with the YREADS Program

What is YREADS?

A program of the YMCA, YREADS provides free reading tutoring for K–3rd graders. The program is designed to help struggling students learn to read at grade level.

Who Can Volunteer with YREADS?
We are looking for enthusiastic people who are passionate about shaping the academic future of children. We are looking for:
•    Retirees
•    Responsible college and high school students
•    Individuals looking to make a difference in the life of a child

When and Where Can I Volunteer?
The YREADS program currently operates in Plantation during the school year, from approximately 2:00 – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week. Because consistency is important to our children, we ask that volunteers stay with the program for at least 3 months.

Volunteer Training
The comprehensive volunteer training will cover the program curriculum and strategies in working with children. You will also have webinars, refreshers, and the support of the YREADS Program along the way.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please express interest below.  The YREADS Program Director or Coordinator will contact you with an application. Volunteers who are selected to join the program will receive information about background screening (which will be paid for by the Y) and training.
